Blindsight
Sabriye Tenberken set up the only school for the blind in Tibet, Braille Without Borders. Together with world-renowned and blind mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer, she took a group of blind students on an epic journey to climb Lhakpa Ri, a 7,000 metre peak close to Mount Everest’s north face. What seems like a dangerous if not impossible challenge makes for an incredible journey, far beyond anything they could have imagined.

All screenings in Cinema 1 will be audio described for viewers with visual impairments. Please collect headsets from the Box Office.
Dir Lucy Walker, UK 2006, 104 mins, subtitles, Cert PG

Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame
A poetic look at how violence and tragedy shape the lives and minds of children, from Iranian director Hana Makhmalbaf (daughter of Mohsen, sister of Samira and at 19 the youngest of the remarkable clan). Set in the Afghan town of Bamian, where the Taliban blew up the Buddhas in 2001, the film follows the trials of a little girl who wants to go to the school for girls across the river from her home. The everyday obstacles she faces turn this small ambition into an epic struggle, with unexpected emotional and political resonance.

Dir Hana Makhmalbaf, Iran 2007, 81 mins, Cert PG, subtitles

La Antena
Another chance to see this remarkable fantasy from Argentina, fashioned as a silent film (it’s set in a city whose inhabitants cannot speak) and full of handmade expressionist special-effects and animated subtitles that give the film the look of a black-and-white illustrated pop-up book. The story tells of a group of free-thinking rebels fighting back against the evil Mr TV, who controls the populace via his hypnotic television broadcasts. Lovers of Tim Burton, Guy Maddin, Terry Gilliam and cinema’s early experimenters won’t want to miss this ingenious flight of fancy.

Released by Dogwoof.
