NOTES TO EDITORS

SITE DEVELOPMENT - TECHNICAL INFORMATION

An insider’s Guide by Designer Seb Neerman

”ExpressionEngine was the content management system of choice. It is an excellent package, with a supportive community and loads of great plugins. It’s easy for non-tecchie clients to update their site and, for webbies, it’s a joy to develop with.

Mint was the stats package of choice by the giant Shaun Inman. A gorgeous stats package to look at, study in depth, customise and tweak to suit.

XHTML, CSS are the standard web languages used to generate the W3C validated code in - nothing new there. For the finishing flourishes we implemented a dash of jQuery, which is all the rage for a good reason: it’s lightweight, unobtrusive, highly flexible and really powerful. Oh, and we only just noticed that it’s the Beeb’s new javascript library of choice. Copycats!”

Benefits to Funky Profiles

Participating venues and suppliers will benefit from the updates as well as the latest measures to increase search engine rankings which will drive more visitors to their category and unique profiles. In addition to redesigning the simple Search and Advanced search area, client’s benefit from a password protected Client Preview area where new profiles can be proofed on the website before they go live.

Funkyvenues.com launches the FunkyMark
Defining unique & Funky Venues for industry & consumer recognition. To coincide with Funky Venues.com first birthday the groundbreaking online venue and event service finder announced the launch of the FunkyMark - a trailblazing authentication visual designed to give registered funky members confirmation of their status as a Funky Venues approved venue or supplier.

Deirdre McGinnis, Managing Director of Funky Venues.com is delighted that a successful first year of trading has culminated in a rarefied roster of funky venues and suppliers for hire which range from memorable bars, clubs and restaurants as well as landmark buildings, cool art galleries, design museums and vintage music halls.

“As well as creating a site dedicated to finding and showcasing the hippest, coolest and yes, funkiest venues, it was always our intention to work towards creating an industry and consumer recognised mark of certification, not unlike the Michelin Star for restaurateurs.

The FunkyMark will become the distinctive mark of differentiation, reassuring Funkyvenues.com end users - from the lay party planner to the seasoned event organiser - that the venue or supplier in question has an ongoing commitment to quality and that any membership to Funky Venues is dependent on upholding those unique and defining qualities.”

Funky Venues.com launched in October 2006 to provide a long-awaited antidote to the often homogenised and dull world of corporate venues and locations.

The award-winning site now features an extensive, eclectic and original range of venues and suppliers and is continually expanding its ever-growing range of venues throughout the UK.

Piranha Heights by Philip Ridley | directed by Lisa Goldman | 15 May – 14 June 2008‘Look - they’re fading. Those liars. Dissolving… It’s the end of their world… The birth of a new one… Our one… Our world.’

It’s Mother’s Day and mother is dead. Now her two sons gather in her home to argue about the truth of their childhood. But a storm is approaching...with a violent new truth all of its own.

Following the sell-out success of Leaves of Glass, this is the latest exciting collaboration between controversial writer Philip Ridley (The Pitchfork Disney, The Krays) and ground-breaking director Lisa Goldman (A Couple of Poor, Polish-Speaking Romanians, Baghdad Wedding).

Visit Loris Gréaud at the ICA

Loris Gréaud – Cellar Door (Once is Always Twice) at the ICA 25th April – 22nd June 2008. The young French artist has his first UK solo show, part of his ongoing Cellar Door project drawing on interweaving interests in architecture, music and science. The ICA is proud to present the first UK solo exhibition by French artist Loris Gréaud, entitled Cellar Door (Once is Always Twice). Gréaud, one of the most innovative and distinctive artists to emerge on the international art scene in recent years, is presenting a new installation which consists of three almost identical rooms, and which draws on his interweaving interests in art, architecture and music. This installation is a continuation of a large-scale ongoing project by Gréaud, entitled Cellar Door.

Gréaud’s practice is characterised by a desire to fuse different fields of knowledge and activity, in a manner which is both futuristic and utopian. His modus operandi is comparable to that of cinematic production (involving collaboration and co-authorship), and he often works with experts from diverse disciplines (including architects and scientists). Gréaud’s work is orientated to ideas and processes rather than finished form, and his projects are liable to manifest themselves in different ways over time, and to move between rumour and fact.

Cellar Door is an ambitious artistic experiment that has a range of manifestations. One is Gréaud’s installation at the ICA; another is a recent exhibition at Palais de Tokyo; a third is an opera which will be staged at the Paris Opera at the end of the year; and a fourth is an actual studio space which Gréaud is building for himself on the outskirts of Paris. The notion of an artist’s studio is fundamental to Cellar Door: operating as a symbol of imagination and potential, and as the starting point of a perpetual cycle of activity.

Gréaud’s installation at the ICA, with its three almost identical rooms, reveals another of the artist’s key preoccupations - the notion of doubling and repetition. The repeating elements within the rooms include: high-speed automatic doors which open like shutters; special light-emitting speakers designed by the artist; and a carpet with a pattern derived in part in part from architect Buckminster Fuller’s experiments with the geodesic dome. Finally, Greaud’s installation at the ICA will be subject to a number of periodic interruptions, one of which is the arrival of three identical figures serving black champagne.

Gréaud’s Cellar Door project is developed further in Celador - a bag of sweets available from a vending machine in the ICA’s bar. The twist is that the sweets have absolutely no taste, and the artist’s intention is that whoever eats them can project whatever flavour they like onto them - thus reflecting the open-ended and collaborative nature of the Cellar Door project as a whole.

Deirdre headed off to LA to parade around and to sample the night life offerings of tinstle-town. On her first night, despite her baggage having been lost by Terminal 5, Deirdre made her way to dinner at the Chateau Marmount stopping off on Melrose to buy a Marc Jacobs dress. The Chateau perched on a hill is reminiscent of a rock and roll Disney Castle, Deirdre and her parade sat in the courtyard gardens and sampled the hotel’s siganture ‘grass-fed burger’ and knocked back Pimms after Pimms and the real highlight of the night was sitting across from Jared Leto and the lead singer of Incubus, Brandon Boyd. Deirdre on her trip managed to lunch at Spargo, try the orginal Nobu Matsuhisa, hit a hip new steak restaurant called STK and of course Deirdre managed to fit in a few clubs, Villa and Les Deux. After her six days though Deirdre was ready to come back and find out what was going on London.

Deirdre and her parade had been invited to a Levis party at Soho House, the aim of the party was to get a cool buzz round Levis. The party on the roof terrace consisted of London's hot things, most of the boys looked fresh out of some rock band.On the terrace it really felt like the first of the summer nights to come as rock and roll tunes dominated the terrace, the staple canapes of bangers and mash, fish and chips were the perfect antidote to the never ending supply of alcohol which was being passed around, but best of all was the goodie bag of a pair of any Levis of your choice from the shop.

Deirdre and her parade were in full force seeing as it was one of the parade’s birthdays. An extensive cocktail menu and mellow vibe, Polka on Portland Street provided the perfect antithesis to the latter part of the night. From Polka Deirdre whizzed onto The Old Blue Last a contrived shabby pub in the heart of East London where gigs are constantly happening upstairs, Deirdre checked out her friend’s band Fucking Vegas. From there Deirdre on a roll spent the rest of the night in the Griffin another little east-end gem of a pub playing on their pool table.

Deirdre and her parade began their night drinking Moroccan themed cocktails in the setting of the notorious establishment that is Momos. The interior similar to a souk encompassed all the elements that a Moroccan restaurant should possess with a lively atmosphere and cocktails aptly named Marrakech O’ Marrakech it paved the way for a fabulous night of frolics. Deirdre and her parade after their Moroccan taster moved to Circus the now infamous night hosted by Jodie Harsh (The It Drag-Queen of the moment) at the Soho Review Bar. Each Friday Jodie ropes in a ‘celebrity’ DJ, so far there has been; Carl Barat, Lily Allen, Jefferson Hack and Kelly Osborne. This time the presenter Alex Zane took to the decks amidst the exceptionally eccentrically dressed crowd and in its burlesque setting it couldn’t have looked more unreal, there is a slight studio 54 feel, in simple terms as its name implies, it’s a Friday night circus.

A party for The Dom Pérignon OEnothèque vintage 1995 champagne at a hot new restaurant, Landau, designed by David Collins in The Langham hotel was exactly what Deirdre needed on a Tuesday night. While being papped Deirdre and her parade glided into an extravaganza of flashing lights and copious amounts of the divine Dom Perignon. The party hosted by Claudia Schiffer brought out a stellar crowd from Kelly Brook to Sophie Ellis Bextor, everyone mingled in the sumptuous circular oak panelled room until the Gorillazs spiced up the night with a live performance that got Deirdre and her parade moving, this could also be due to the fact of the never ending glasses of champagne that were being passed round. Afterwards Deirdre and her parade made their way to Sketch, perhaps it was the Marie Antoinette inspired picture of Claudia Schiffer at the party that provoked a ‘Let them eat cake’ attitude as cakes and champagne were the finishing touches to a rather decadent night.

Dolce the new club on the West End scene on 10 Air Street offered Deirdre and her parade an opulent night out. As the big black doors swung open, Deirdre and her parade were greeted by a club which was more like an Italian Palazzo; there were fountains, black statues and heaps of plush red velvet decorating every inch of the club. Once seated on a long banquet Deirdre and her parade took advantage of the magnums of champagne and the huge bottles of grey goose vodka on the massive tables. As the DJ spun some crowd pleasing tracks, Deirdre danced round the vast dance floor and embraced the ‘Dolce’ way of life.

Christopher Kane aftershow party at Bungalow 8

Bungalow 8 is the London branch of Amy Sacco’s infamous exclusive bar, Bungalow 8 of the New York fame. Following Jefferson Hack’s hippest Party thrown for Christopher Kane last fashion week there was a definite need for an encore. Set in the St Martin’s lane Hotel Deirdre and her parade made their way through the door which has a sign by it saying ‘What happens in Bungalow 8 stays in Bungalow 8’ clearly an indication of the extremity of the partying that was about to begin. Once inside, Deirdre placed herself on the first floor bar with it’s beyond dim lighting, it’s a surprise how she even managed to recognize Nicholas Hoult from Skins let alone have a lengthy chat with him. Moving downstairs Deirdre whooped it up on the tiny dance floor, which consisted of a path in the middle of the bar, but she was not alone as the whole fashion week contingency joined in and in true Bungalow 8 manner Deirdre was relieved to know that Bungalow 8’s mantra was true.

Chinoiserie and Thirties deco with splashings of black lacquer everywhere sums up David Tang's creation of a sumptuous boudoir of a bar, China Tang.Nestled in the immediately inviting and refined bar Deirdre and her parade delved into the aptly named Singapore Sling cocktails.

The other beauty of this bar is the Dim Sum menu they have on hand all day, Deirdre relished the heavenly scallop dumplings, the perfect antidote to the heavily alcohol laden cocktails. check out Deirdre’s Parade for more funky blogs.

Strolling down Brick Lane whilst still eating her cream cheese bagel from the first and most famous Beigel shop. Deirdre stumbled across the road into an Aladdin's cave of a bar, Casa Blue.Dripping wax candles strewed tables and mismatched furniture, including a bunk bed where Deirdre and her parade decided to perch, provided the most perfect example of what a true bohemian joint should look like. Underneath fairly lights and other kitsch paraphernalia Deirdre sampled what some have dubbed in such an outlandish way, as the best mojitos in London, for it is true they are by far the best.

While in this Moroccan come Cuban grotto of a bar Deirdre relaxed to the music which perfectly fitted the bar’s unique character, and so Deirdre and her parade puffed away on the shisha pipes now knowing one of the best kept secret bars in London.
Deirdre and her parade were in the mood for a good pub session, so off she trundled to the Hawley Arms, a Camden gaff which is at the epicentre of a new cool Britannia, one could only describe it as the Met Bar of pubs.So as Deirdre took in the surrounding music, the Hawley boasts the 8th best jukebox in London, she sipped her pint and went out onto the best smoking terrace covered in fairy lights.

The pub encompasses three floors, so there was plenty of space for Deirdre to run amok in, the mixture of it being like a pub/club/bar made it the perfect place for whatever mood you’re in. Making the most of the generously late serving time, well this is a rock and roll Mecca of a pub after all, she carried on drinking and eating the pub’s trademark snack of jellybeans well into the night. Check out Deirdre’s Parade for more funky blogs.
