Venue Review
Character: Laid back urban cool meets the Victorian warehouse.
Funky Features: Commissioned art-work, Ranked one of Tatlers best 'newcomer' restaurants, period architectural features.
Location and History
Tucked away on a narrow, cobbled street near Kings Cross, 6 St Chad’s Place is a hidden gem. This once rundown Victorian warehouse, above the Thameslink platform, was acquired at auction by award-winning architects Squire and Partners. When the firm moved to the area from South Kensington in 2001, they were keen to create a well-designed and comfortable space in which to eat, drink and relax. The building follows the company’s principles of “regional modernism”, being at once, thoroughly contemporary and in harmony with the the Kings Cross regeneration project.
Interior
Coming across 6 St Chad’s Place feels a bit like stumbling on a local secret. Tucked away down an unremarkable, shabby side street, from the outside St Chad’s looks very much like the mechanics warehouse it once was – apart that is from the beautiful new window frames. But once you’re inside you can see the full extent of the subtle and very impressive architectural re-vamp. The original brick walls have been sandblasted and the timber frame exposed giving the space an open and relaxed feel. The dramatic roof light has been restored allowing natural light to flood in. By night, St Chad’s can be transformed using subtle coloured uplights and candles.
Covering one wall the restaurant’s most striking feature is ¬a part-photographic, part-graphic image of a train apparently about to screech to a halt. Furniture wise. 6 St Chad’s Place blends simple retro tables and comfortable 50s leather sofas, all of which can be re-arranged to suit any private event.
Spaces for Hire
6 St Chads Place holds up to 120 people and makes a relaxed and cool backdrop to any event. In-house DJs can be commissioned and the restaurant’s tapas comes highly recommended. NB Only available for private hire at weekends.
