Venue Review
Character: Cavernous hideaway in former garage.
Funky Features: The back-to-basics, DIY aesthetic of the Red Gate Gallery is its principle selling point. It is a stripped-down space, once occupied by a Renault car garage. The proportions of the space remain that of a mechanic’s work area: deep and wide. A low, semi-circular ceiling is imposed by the railway arches in which it sits.
Location and History
The Redgate Gallery is on the western fringe of Brixton’s bar and club heartland - Coldharbour Lane, just across the road from Loughborough Junction train station.
Interior
An artists’ ‘work space’ and furniture maker’s studio as well as a hireable venue, the Red Gate Gallery consists of one large inverted L-shaped space with a sectioned off area for the artists to work in. An unusual-looking bar professionally crafted from sheet metal sits at the deep end of the gallery.
The Red Gate can happily house up to 80 people, and with a live music and drinks licence it is potentially the ideal location for a ‘large but intimate’ bash. The gallery is also versatile to the point that it could be adapted for product launches, low-key fashions shows, meetings and cocktail receptions.
Although they cannot supply in-house catering, the Red House Gallery are happy to accept external caterers.
Spaces for Hire
Apart from the work areas, the gallery is available for hire in its entirety.
