Venue Review

Character: 19th Century industrial curiosity revamped as 21st century landmark.

Funky Features: One of London’s legendary venues; newly restored flexible Main Space.

Location and History

The Roundhouse was originally built as an engine repair shed in 1846. Rapid advancements in train travel meant the carriages became too long for the Roundhouse. and so the building was sold to the Gilbey’s Gin Company and used as a warehouse. In 1969 it was bought as a base for Centre 42 and swiftly became one of London’s landmark venues. The venue has hosted Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and the only UK performance by The Doors. In 2004 the building was closed for two years, in order to carry out a £30million restoration, before re-opening in 2006.

Interior

The renovation has provided an exciting fusion of old and new. Original Victorian features have been carefully restored, including the circular windows in the main space, that lets natural light into the main space for the first time in a century. Major additions include the new Circle Balcony in the Main Space and an adjoining 3-floor wing holding a studio, bars and cafes.

Spaces for Hire

The Main Space is an amazingly versatile space. Thanks to the clever use of drapes it can be both grand and intimate. The Circle Balcony provides additional space for drinks receptions or VIP areas. The original Roundhouse building is linked to the new wing by a stunning glass atrium, which acts as the main entrance hall for visitors. Within the building is the Studio Theatre, a black box space which can hold up receptions up to 180 people. The Circle Bar and Torquil’s Bar with its own Terrace space are great reception areas for 100 people.
